Project 52: Week 2 - January

Happy New Year! It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog, but all of that is about to change! After a year hiatus, I’m back with my Project 52. Only this time, I am participating as part of a blog ring with a group of photographers from the Beautiful Beasties Network. We’re all pet photographers and live all around the world. Each week one of us picks a theme, and we have 7 days to photograph our interpretation of that theme. You can see our work on Fridays when we post our images on our blogs. At the end of my blog will be a link to the next photographer’s blog. Keep clicking on the links until you get back to mine. It’s a lot of fun. I hope you’ll follow along with me!

Since I didn’t get connected with the group in time for the first week’s theme (Introductions), I’m going to do both in one post. I’ll start by introducing myself for those of you who haven’t met me. I live in the heart of Pennsylvania, in a small town mostly known for the Pennsylvania State University, home of the Penn State Nittany Lions. I’ve had a pet sitting service for over 20 years and began photographing pets when my golden retriever Mika was diagnosed with cancer. You can read more about her story here. I share my home with my husband and our crazy golden retriever Izzy. From time to time we foster dogs from the local shelter where I volunteer photographing the cats who are looking for their forever homes. You’ll be seeing a lot of Izzy throughout the year as she will likely be my main model. Not that she considers modeling hard work, no, not as long as there are treats involved!

This week’s theme is January and what it means to us. Since I live in the northern hemisphere, I think of cold, windy, frigid temperatures and no sun for weeks on end. This week for example, we’ve had rain, snow, sleet, freezing rain and wind gusts up to 30 mph. It’s been as warm as 49 degrees and as cold as 13! Since this is a slow time for me with work, it’s also a time for rest, relaxation and catching up on projects I never seem to have time to do. January is not my favorite month as I prefer warmer weather and much, much more sun.

Izzy, on the other hand, would probably disagree. She is more frisky and playful in the winter than any other time of the year. No matter how cold it is, she loves her walks and romps in the park. When I leave for work, she gives me the guilty look for not taking her with me. But I can’t blame her, if I had a fur coat, I’d probably feel the same way!

I recently discovered this great park for photographing. After a snowstorm earlier this week, Izzy and I headed over there to capture what looks like January in PA to me. Can you tell she's working hard for her reward?

Next up, head on over to Pavlina Sanborn photography to see her take on this week's theme, January.
