The Sky’s About to Explode—Here’s How to Keep Your Dog Chill
While many of us look forward to the 4th of July, backyard barbecues, family gatherings, and of course, fireworks, our dogs often feel quite the opposite.
The loud booms, and sudden noises can cause real fear and stress for pets. If your dog struggles with anxiety during fireworks, you’re not alone.
Here are five practical tips to help calm your dog and keep them safe during the 4th of July festivities.
Create a safe, quiet place. Set up a cozy, secure spot in your home where your dog can relax. This could be a crate (if they’re crate trained), a bedroom or guest room, a closet or bathroom with no window. Add familiar bedding toys and even some of your clothing to help make the space feel comforting. Close windows and blinds and play some soft music.
Get your pup plenty of exercise and mental activity before the fireworks begin. A long walk, a game of fetch or a training session can help burn off some nervous energy. A tired dog is often a calmer dog.
Consider claiming products. There are a lot of safe, vet-approved calming aids available for dogs including -
calming treats or chews
CBD oil
thundershirts
pheromone sprays or diffusers
Keep them indoors and safe. Even normal calm dogs can panic and bolt out the dog when startled. Make sure doors, windows and gates are securely closed. Double check they have their collars on and their ID tags are up to date.
Stay calm yourself. Your dog takes emotional cues from you. Sometimes just your presence is enough to be a great source of comfort for them.
Every dog is different. What works for one dog may not work for another and that’s ok. One of my dogs was calmer with a thunder shirt, but that did not work for another one of my dogs. With a little planning, you can enjoy a quiet, more peaceful 4th of July together.
