Why you shouldn't wait to get pet photos

When I get calls from people who want to schedule a pet photography session, the first question I always ask is: Why now?

More often than not, the answer is something along the lines of: "My dog just got diagnosed with [fill in the blank]," or, "My pup is getting older, and she's starting to struggle with the stairs. We don't go for walks anymore, and I know it won't be long before I have to say goodbye."

I understand that sentiment all too well. After my first golden retriever, Mika, was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma just three days after turning 9, I found myself in that same place—unsure of how much longer we had together. We rushed her into lifesaving surgery, not knowing whether she'd even survive the procedure. Spoiler alert: She did. We were lucky. We got to spend seven more months together, time that I’ll always treasure.

But here’s the thing: I deeply regretted not having photos of her before that. I had so many opportunities to capture her spirit, personality and our bond, but I waited. Until it was almost too late. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Get the photos now, while your pup is still healthy and full of life. Get them while you’re both still enjoying walks, playtime, and the simple joy of just being together.

We often put things off, waiting for the “perfect” time. Maybe your dog is still working on training, or you’re waiting until you’ve hit that fitness goal, or maybe you’ve just been waiting for the right moment to allocate the funds. But life is unpredictable. It’s easy to think there’s always time, but sometimes there isn’t.

And when that time comes—when you’re left with memories but no more moments to capture—it’s too late.

No amount of money, time, or prayer can bring your furry friend back once they’re gone. But the memories you make now, through photographs, are timeless. These images aren’t just about what they look like, they’re about the bond you share—the unconditional love, the joy, the companionship. You know, the stuff that lives on.

Lately, life has been reminding me just how fragile and precious it is. Between experiencing the aftermath of hurricanes Helene and Milton and seeing friends face unimaginable hardships that may leave them forever changed, I’ve been reminded of what truly matters—relationships, kindness, love, and the connections we hold dear.

So, if you're hesitating or if you're unsure whether now is the right time—contact me. Let’s talk it through together. These moments won’t last forever, but your memories can.
